How to set up a home network: a beginner's guide in plain English
New to home networking? How to connect your modem and router, set up fast, secure Wi-Fi, fix dead zones and choose the right kit, in plain English.

Amit has been using computers for more than 40 years. His first machine was a 32K BBC Micro, followed by the Apple IIe and Apple IIc, and he's been taking technology apart, figuring out how it works and telling friends what to buy ever since. Put simply, he's a geek.
He runs Image Devices, the studio that publishes GeekyGoo, runs KiddiesTV and makes the AirLan file-sharing app.
Amit doesn't pick sides. Before smartphones went mainstream he carried HP Pocket PC phones and Nokias, and he's been an iPhone user since the original iPhone. Today his phone is an iPhone 18 Pro Max.
At Image Devices he works with a range of Samsung Galaxy phones, iPads, lots of Windows and Linux machines, and Macs spanning more than a decade, from a 2012 Mac Pro tower to the latest Mac Studio, Mac mini and iMac. For play, he games on an ASUS gaming laptop.
That mix is why GeekyGoo covers every platform, and why our advice tends to be about what works for you rather than which brand wins.
When Amit has used a product himself, the review says so and explains how. When he hasn't, the article says that too, and is built from the maker's own specifications and independent reviews, with every source listed at the end. Read the full editorial policy.
