Which iPhone should you buy in 2026?

Apple now sells seven iPhones, from $699 to $1,999 (₹79,900 to ₹2,99,900): the new iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, the foldable iPhone Duo, and four older models that all just got $100 more expensive. The honest truth hasn’t changed: most people are about to overspend. Here’s how to pick the right one in five minutes.

Why the iPhone 17 is still right for most people

The iPhone 17 ($899 / ₹99,900) gives you almost everything that matters: the A19 chip, a 6.3-inch 120Hz ProMotion display with Always-On, a strong pair of 48MP cameras (main and ultra wide), an 18MP selfie camera, up to 30 hours of video playback, and 256GB of storage to start. The new Pro models are better, but for everyday photos, messaging, streaming and apps you’d rarely notice the difference. Start here, and only step up if a specific need pulls you.

When to spend less: the iPhone 17e

The iPhone 17e ($699 / ₹79,900) runs the same A19 chip as the iPhone 17, supports Apple Intelligence and starts at 256GB. You give up the second camera (it has a single 48MP lens), the iPhone 17’s bigger 120Hz ProMotion screen, and a few hours of battery (26 hours of video against 30). You keep the core iPhone experience. If budget matters, this is the smart buy.

What about the iPhone 16? Apple still sells it for $799 / ₹89,900, but that’s now more than the 17e for an older A18 chip and just 128GB of storage. Its only real advantages are a second, ultra-wide camera and the Dynamic Island. Unless you find it heavily discounted, get the 17e or stretch to the 17.

When to spend more: iPhone 18 Pro

The iPhone 18 Pro ($1,199 / ₹1,64,900) is the upgrade that’s genuinely worth it if you shoot a lot:

• Three 48MP cameras, including a main camera with a variable aperture (a first for iPhone), plus new manual “Pro controls” for aperture and shutter speed.
• A 4x telephoto with up to 8x optical-quality zoom, the big thing the cheaper models and even the Duo lack.
• The A20 Pro chip with a bigger cooling system, for up to 40% better sustained performance than the 17 Pro.
• Up to 36 hours of video playback (34 hours on Indian models), a smaller Dynamic Island, and a 6.3-inch screen.

Reviewers agree it’s a solid step up rather than a revolution. Gizmodo called the 18 Pro models the best non-foldable phones around; others noted the improvements are modest for a price that’s $100 higher than last year’s.

Biggest screen, best battery: iPhone 18 Pro Max

The iPhone 18 Pro Max ($1,299 / ₹1,79,900) has everything in the 18 Pro, plus:

• A 6.9-inch screen, the biggest you can get without a fold.
• The best battery life in the lineup: up to 45 hours of video playback (43 hours on Indian models), about six hours more than last year’s 17 Pro Max.
• It weighs 249 g, against 211 g for the 18 Pro.

If “lasts all day and then some” and a huge screen are your priorities, this is the iPhone to get. It’s also $700 cheaper than the iPhone Duo with the same chip and better cameras.

The design pick: iPhone Air

The iPhone Air ($1,099 / ₹1,49,900) is all about feel: just 5.64 mm thin and 165 g, with a 6.5-inch 120Hz screen and the A19 Pro chip. The trade-offs are a single 48MP camera and shorter battery life (up to 27 hours of video). Buy it because you’ll love holding it, not for the spec sheet. Note that it’s still the 2025 model, and a new Air is reportedly coming in spring 2027, so if you’re not in a hurry, it may be worth waiting.

The new foldable: iPhone Duo

The iPhone Duo ($1,999 / ₹2,99,900) is Apple’s first foldable: a 5.4-inch phone that opens into a 7.6-inch mini-tablet with side-by-side apps. Reviewers love the near-invisible crease and the hinge, but it has no telephoto camera and no Face ID, many apps aren’t optimised for it yet, and deliveries have slipped to January. Is a regular iPhone 18 coming?

Not yet. Apple’s current lineup has no standard iPhone 18. Credible reporting from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman says an iPhone 18, an iPhone 18e and a new iPhone Air are expected in spring 2027. If you’re happy with your current phone, waiting a few months could get you a newer model at the iPhone 17’s price point.

How to actually save money

1. Know about the price rise. Apple raised the iPhone 16, 17, 17e and Air by $100 in September 2026, reportedly because of higher memory costs. Other retailers set their own prices, so it’s worth comparing before you buy from Apple.
2. Consider last year’s Pro. Apple no longer sells the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, but other retailers may still have stock, sometimes discounted, and they’re still excellent phones.
3. Use festive offers and trade-ins. In India, Apple is currently offering instant cashback of up to ₹7,000 on selected models with eligible cards. In the US, trade-in credit on a recent iPhone can knock hundreds off.
4. Buy the storage up front. 256GB is plenty for most people, and storage is the one thing you can’t add later.

The bottom line

Don’t buy the most expensive iPhone. Buy the right one. For almost everyone, that’s the iPhone 17, or the 17e if you’re watching your budget. Step up to the 18 Pro if the camera genuinely earns it, or the 18 Pro Max if screen and battery rule your day. Leave the iPhone Duo to early adopters with deep pockets, at least until apps catch up.
