Kindle (2026): Amazon's most affordable Kindle, and whether it's still worth it
Amazon's cheapest Kindle got thinner, faster and pricier in 2026. What the $150 Kindle gets right, what it still lacks, and which e-reader to buy instead.

The basic Kindle has always been the easy recommendation: small, simple, cheap, and good enough for almost everyone who just wants to read. The 2026 Kindle keeps the first three promises better than ever. It’s thinner, lighter, faster and has a sharper-looking screen. The catch is the fourth one: it’s no longer cheap. At $149.99, the entry-level Kindle now costs what a Paperwhite used to.
So is the most affordable Kindle still the one to buy? For a lot of readers, yes, but not for everyone. Here’s what’s new, what’s missing and when you should spend your money elsewhere.
We haven’t tested the 2026 Kindle ourselves. This guide is based on Amazon’s official specs and independent reviews, and we’ve kept the catches in.
What’s new in the 2026 Kindle
Amazon announced the new Kindle on 1 October 2026 and put it on sale the same day. The big changes:
- A flush, flat front. The screen now sits level with the bezel instead of in a recessed frame, like the pricier Kindles. It’s still a 6-inch, 300 ppi glare-free display, and reviewers say text looks darker with better contrast than before.
- Thinner and lighter. The plastic model is 6.85 mm thick and weighs 140 g, down from about 8 mm and 158 g for the 2024 Kindle. It’s genuinely pocketable.
- Faster. Amazon says books open 30% faster than on the previous model.
- A better power button. It’s moved from the bottom edge, where it was easy to press by accident, to the upper right side. Reviewers singled this out as one of the best changes.
- A battery you can replace yourself. The back panel opens so you can swap the battery when it wears out, rare for any gadget these days.
- USB-C charging in about two hours with a 20W adapter (not included; the box has just the Kindle and a quick start guide), and up to six weeks of battery life at 30 minutes of reading a day.
- Bluetooth audio for Audible audiobooks and Amazon’s text-to-speech screen reader.
The new Kindle Aluminium
For the first time there’s a step-up version of the basic Kindle. The Kindle Aluminium has the same 6-inch screen and features, but in a matte housing made from 80% recycled aluminium, with 32GB of storage, no lockscreen ads and built-in magnets for snap-on covers. It comes in Alpine Sky or Seaglass Green and weighs 162 g, still only 6.9 mm thick.
Reviewers love it. Trusted Reviews called it the best-built Kindle since the Oasis, and The eBook Reader called it the nicest entry-level Kindle ever made. At $189.99, it’s only $20 more than the ad-free plastic model, so if you were going to pay to remove the ads anyway, it’s the better buy.
Prices: the cheapest Kindle isn’t cheap any more
| Model | Price (US) | Storage | Ads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kindle (2026) in Ube or Graphite | $149.99 | 16GB | Lockscreen ads |
| Kindle (2026) without ads | $169.99 | 16GB | None |
| Kindle Aluminium | $189.99 | 32GB | None |
| Kindle Kids | from $179.99 | 16GB | None, and it comes with a cover and a year of Kids+ |
Why so much? In August 2026, Amazon quietly raised the old 16GB Kindle from $109.99 to $149.99 and the Paperwhite from $159.99 to $199.99, blaming big increases in the cost of memory and storage chips (reported by Fortune). The new model launched at those higher prices, so the most affordable Kindle now costs $40 more than it did a year ago.
What it still doesn’t have
This is where the price stings. For $150, you still don’t get:
- Warm light. You can’t shift the screen to an amber tone for night reading, a feature that Kobo includes on its similarly priced e-reader.
- Waterproofing. Not one for the bath or the pool.
- Auto-brightness. You adjust the front light yourself.
None of that is new; the basic Kindle has never had them. But they were easier to forgive at $100 than at $150.
The catches reviewers found
- “A great e-reader at the wrong price.” That’s Trusted Reviews’ verdict (4/5). It praised the build, size and screen, and criticised the price and missing features.
- Light bleed in dark mode. Good e-Reader reports a glow around the edge of the screen on some units, both plastic and aluminium, most visible in dark mode. Trusted Reviews also noticed a thin white line around the bezel in dark mode. According to Good e-Reader, Amazon says a slight glow at maximum brightness is normal but will exchange units with severe bleed. If yours bothers you, use the return window.
- Accidental page turns. The flush front makes it easier to brush the screen, according to The eBook Reader.
- Battery life is good, not amazing. Trusted Reviews used about 30% of the battery a week at roughly two hours of reading a day, so expect to charge every three weeks or so with heavy use.
- Buyers are mixed. On Amazon US, the 2026 Kindle sits at 3.8 out of 5 stars from around 300 ratings at the time of writing.
Kindle vs Paperwhite vs Kobo: which should you buy?
| Kindle (2026) | Kindle Paperwhite (2026) | Kobo Clara BW | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price (US) | $149.99 with ads | $199.99 with ads | $159.99 |
| Screen | 6”, 300 ppi | 7”, 300 ppi | 6”, 300 ppi |
| Warm light | No | Yes | Yes |
| Waterproof | No | Yes (IPX8) | Yes (IPX8) |
| Battery | Up to 6 weeks | Up to 12 weeks | Weeks |
| Weight | 140 g | 204 g | 174 g |
| Store | Kindle | Kindle | Kobo, plus EPUB files and library loans |
- The Kindle (2026) is the smallest and lightest of the three. If you read mainly during the day, already own Kindle books and don’t mind lockscreen ads, it’s still the best small e-reader for the money.
- The Paperwhite is $50 more and fixes every complaint above: a bigger 7-inch screen, warm light, waterproofing and double the battery life. If you read in bed or by the pool, it’s worth stretching for. (The fancier Paperwhite Signature at $249.99 adds auto-brightness, 32GB and no ads.)
- The Kobo Clara BW is the one to beat if you don’t need Amazon’s store. For about the price of the Kindle, you get warm light and waterproofing, and it reads EPUB books natively and has OverDrive library borrowing built in (in supported countries). You give up the Kindle store and Amazon’s ecosystem.
In India?
The 2026 Kindle isn’t sold in India yet; India wasn’t one of the 19 countries in Amazon’s launch. On Amazon India today, the only current Kindle listed is the 2024 Kindle Paperwhite at ₹20,999 (after its own price increase in August). If you’re shopping in India, either buy the Paperwhite now or wait to see whether the 2026 models arrive.
Handy extras
- Kindle Click ($34.99) is a small Bluetooth page-turn remote that works with the 2026 Kindles, handy for reading while eating or lying down.
- A cover (from $39.99) is worth it if the Kindle lives in a bag; the Aluminium model’s magnets hold its cover in place.
- Note that Amazon’s new Page Turn Cover with physical buttons only fits the Paperwhite Signature and Colorsoft Signature, not the basic Kindle.
Should you buy the 2026 Kindle?
Buy it if you want the smallest, lightest Kindle, mostly read in daylight, and live in the Kindle ecosystem. Get the Aluminium model if you’d pay to remove ads anyway: it’s $20 more and much nicer.
Skip it if you read in bed, by the pool or in the bath. The Paperwhite is worth the extra $50. And if you’re not tied to Amazon, the Kobo Clara BW gives you more for about the same money.
The bottom line
The 2026 Kindle is the best basic Kindle Amazon has made: thinner, faster, sharper and easier to hold, with a battery you can replace and a lovely aluminium option. It’s just no longer the bargain it used to be. Amazon’s own devices are often discounted during big sales, so if you’re not in a hurry, it’s worth waiting for one.
