October 2026 brought the biggest smart home shake-up in years. On 13 October, Apple launched its first smart display, HomeView, along with the HomePod mini 2 and its own line of smart home accessories. Two weeks later, on 28 October, Amazon answered with a redesigned Echo Show 16, a new Echo Dot, an Echo Studio with a camera and more.
What’s striking is how differently they’ve gone about it. Apple built a small, personal 7-inch screen around Siri AI and your iPhone. Amazon built a big 16-inch screen that’s half TV, half family noticeboard. Here’s how they compare, and which suits your home.
We haven’t used any of these devices yet. This comparison is based on Apple’s and Amazon’s announcements and specifications.
The short answer
- Your household uses iPhones? Go Apple. HomeView and HomePod mini 2 are built to work with your iPhone, Apple Music and FaceTime.
- Android phones, a mix of phones, or a Prime membership you already pay for? Go Amazon. Alexa works with any phone, and Alexa+ is free with Prime.
- In India? Apple’s new HomeView and HomePod mini 2 are on sale here. Amazon’s new Echo devices are US-only for now, although Alexa+ is rolling out in India.

Smart displays: Echo Show 16 vs HomeView
Apple HomeView ($299 / ₹39,900) is a 7-inch screen on a domed speaker base, with a tilting hinge. It comes in four colours, plus a wall-mounted version that needs a separately sold mount. What makes it different:
- It knows who’s looking. It recognises up to six people by their face and shows each one their own Home Screen, messages and calendar. Personal content only appears when that person is recognised and their iPhone is nearby and recently unlocked.
- Sound first. Two drivers in the display plus a down-firing woofer and two passive radiators in the base, with Spatial Audio.
- FaceTime, recipes and Find My, plus a Home Camera face that shows up to nine camera feeds at once.
- It listens for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and alerts your iPhone or Apple Watch.
Amazon Echo Show 16 ($499.99) goes the other way: a 16-inch full HD screen that’s nearly 40% thinner than before.
- A second TV. Fire TV is built in, with a remote in the box, so it’s a real streaming screen for the kitchen.
- A family dashboard. “Screen Styles” turn it into a calendar-and-chores organiser, a photo frame or a smart home control panel.
- A better camera: 13MP wide-angle with auto-framing and, for the first time, night vision.
- Wall mount included, or add a stand from $69.99.
Which is better? HomeView is the better choice for an iPhone home that wants a personal assistant, great sound and FaceTime in a small space. The Echo Show 16 is better if you want a big screen for TV, recipes and a family calendar, but it costs $200 more, only ships “later this year”, and a counter stand costs extra.
Speakers: Echo Dot and Echo Studio vs HomePod mini 2
HomePod mini 2 ($149 / ₹18,900) gets Apple’s S10 chip, a light that glows with the music, and can act as a speaker for your Mac. It listens for smoke and CO alarms, and with Siri AI it will recognise up to six household voices. Siri AI comes in a later software update.
The new Echo Dot ($99.99) is cheaper and more of a gadget: it’s also a smart home hub (Zigbee, Matter and Thread) and an eero Wi-Fi extender. If you want room-filling sound, the Echo Studio costs $219.99, or $249.99 with a built-in camera that lets Alexa see what you show it.
Which is better? For music in an Apple home, HomePod mini 2. For the most features per rupee or dollar, and for running smart home gadgets without a separate hub, the Echo Dot.
Assistants: Alexa+ vs Siri AI
Both companies rebuilt their assistants with generative AI, and both now hold proper conversations.
- Alexa+ is designed for all of Amazon’s new devices. It can reason through multi-step requests, and on the Echo Show 16 it shows its answers visually. It’s free with Prime; in the US, non-Prime households pay $19.99 a month.
- Siri AI comes built into HomeView, initially in beta. With an Apple Intelligence iPhone it can draw on your messages, calendar and apps for personal answers. There’s no subscription for the basics, but Apple says server-heavy features have daily limits, with expanded access for a fee in future. Smart camera features, such as recognising people and packages, need an iCloud+ plan.
The catch for Apple: to get the most from Siri AI on HomeView, you need a recent, Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. The catch for Amazon: without Prime, Alexa+ gets expensive.
Smart home control
- Amazon has the more open, gadget-friendly approach. The Echo Dot is a hub for Zigbee, Matter and Thread devices, Ring cameras plug straight in, and the upcoming Alexa Home Map will show every light, lock and camera on a 3D model of your home.
- Apple uses the Home app, with HomeView and HomePod mini as hubs, and supports Matter accessories. Its new Apple Home Collection of cameras, thermostats and a lock, made with LG and Schneider Electric, starts arriving in December.
Privacy
- Apple goes further on paper. HomeView processes camera and microphone data in isolated Secure Exclaves on its A18 chip, and Siri requests either stay on the device or use Apple’s Private Cloud Compute, which doesn’t store your data.
- Amazon is putting cameras in more places, including the new Echo Studio. Its devices have a button that turns the microphones and camera off, a light shows when the Studio’s camera is streaming to the cloud, and the Echo Time bedside clock is deliberately camera-free.
Buying in India
For Indian readers, the answer is simpler right now:
- Apple HomeView is ₹39,900, available from 13 November. Siri AI on HomeView works in English in India.
- HomePod mini 2 is ₹18,900 and in stores from 30 October. Siri AI comes to it in a later update.
- Amazon’s new Echo Show 16, Echo Dot, Echo Studio and Echo Time are US launches with no Indian prices or dates yet.
- Alexa+ is rolling out in India through an Early Access programme that began on 16 September 2026, in English, Hindi and Hinglish. It’s free during Early Access, then free with Prime or ₹2,000 a month without it. It works on compatible Echo devices you already own.
The bottom line
Apple and Amazon now want very different jobs in your home. Apple’s HomeView is a personal, privacy-focused hub for iPhone households, smaller and cheaper than you might expect from Apple. Amazon’s Echo Show 16 is a bigger, TV-first family screen that suits Prime households and anyone with an Android phone, though it costs more. For speakers, the HomePod mini 2 wins for Apple music lovers, and the Echo Dot wins on value and smart home features.
Pick the one that matches the phones in your house. That decides more than any spec sheet. If you’d like more detail on Amazon’s side, see our guide to all of Amazon’s new Echo devices.
